What is today known as the township of Hampton, PA, got its start during the heat of conflict during the American Revolutionary War. Hampton Township’s first settlers arrived in the late 18th century in the midst of the war. At the time, the name of the town was Talley Cavey, and the predominant industry was hunting and trapping.
The township itself received its own independence in 1861, when a Congressional representative from Pennsylvania signed the declaration required to give it township status. The grateful citizens chose to name the township after that judge, Judge Moses Hampton.
Today, many landmarks and some roads continue to bear the names of the township’s earliest settlers. Even more interestingly, some residents can trace their own ancestry all the way back to the township’s founding days!
There is a book called “Historic Hampton Township” that details the fascinating history of the township right back to its earliest days, and all proceeds go to support the local Hampton Township Depreciation Lands Museum. The term “depreciation lands” refers to a special plot of land in 1783 held in reserve for soldiers returning home from the Revolutionary War. Today, the township also maintains a Veterans Memorial Court in honor of its citizens who have served.
