Pittsburgh was a thriving village in the late 1700’s. The hilly terrain east of Pittsburgh continued to be sparsely populated even in the early 1800’s. That changed in 1807 when the Northern Turnpike, known as the Grandfather of modern highways, was completed between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
