Benefits of Electric Furnace & Electric Heating

To own an electric furnace in the Greater Pittsburgh area, you’re in luck as having electric furnaces and heating will bring you some of these benefits:

Safety

By your having an electric heater in your home or workplace, you won’t need natural gas which could potentially expose you and others to carbon monoxide poisoning, fires—and even explosions.

Energy Efficiency = Lower Costs

Wanting to keep you and your family warm and comfortable during the winter months doesn’t mean massive spending.

Lower Initial Cost

Electric furnaces usually cost less to install than other heating choices. If you are on a tight budget, an electric furnace is an excellent way to save money upfront.

Why Choose an Electric Furnace?

Generally, electric furnaces are less expensive upfront and have a longer life expectancy than gas furnaces – and let’s not forget that electric furnaces generally pose less risk to safety. Also, an electric heating unit is much quieter and typically last as long as 20 to 30 years; typically they require very little attention. These types of furnaces are straightforward to troubleshoot and operate.

Tips for Troubleshooting Electric Furnaces & Heaters

Our electric furnace troubleshooting tips is provided as a general guide. It is by no means an exhaustive list of all areas which may be required to properly diagnose your electric furnace’s or electric heater’s problem. We recommend calling Kenneth McDonald Plumbing & HVAC for a complete diagnosis of your furnace problem.

When starting any electric furnace troubleshooting start first with the most common problem and work your way to the more complex problems.

Note: Before you begin any electric furnace troubleshooting please locate your user or owner’s manual and keep it in a safe place for easy access. A pro tip would be to adhere the manual to the side of the unit itself in a sleeve. Do not block any open vents or place the paper manual near open flame or heating coils.

  • Ensure that the electric furnace is getting power. Sometimes a sudden power outage can cause the furnace to malfunction.
  • Some electric furnaces have a reset button. Consult your owner’s manual where this may be located. Try resetting the unit.
  • Once you have determined that unit is getting power. Next, check your thermostat is operating normally.
  • Consult your thermostat’s owner’s manual. Sometimes a battery operated thermostat can malfunction if the battery is low. Try replacing the battery. Then, increase the air temperature until you hear the furnace turn on (5 degrees above the current air temperature should be enough).
  • If your furnace’s fan does not turn on. Check the fuse box or circuit breaker. If the fuse is blown, replace it. If the circuit breaker is tripped, try resetting it. Then, attempt to have the furnace turn on by increasing the air temperature until the furnace or blower turns on.
  • If you are still having trouble, the furnace problem should be evaluated by one of our furnace repair experts at McDonald Plumbing and HVAC.

Home Furnace Filter Check-up

Remember that you should replace the unit’s furnace filter monthly to ensure that the air is being properly filtered and so the furnace can “breathe” without straining the blower or the unit itself. Additionally, regular changes of your filter will help you and your family enjoy comfortable temperatures during those cold Greater Pittsburgh winters – year after year.
